Be bear aware

On line I'm reading about our new whovillian hometown and come across the bear aware info. Really? I grew up in rural NB but we never even thought about bears, but I guess we were a few house scattered here and there. We may have seen a bear once at the dump (we transported our own garbage then). I keep reading since all the points are important to know (pick up fallen fruit from trees, don't leave pet food outside, etc) and then read a bear alert in a creek area. It sounds familiar so I keep reading and lo and behold it's in our neighbourhood! I find that amusing actually. What a change. We're going from worrying about crack addicts in the alley to bears in our backyard.

I'm off to work. More later...

Also in your new Whoville, coyotes and other wildlife. It's a big problem now because your new Whoville is growing rapidly and encroaching upon forests and habitats.

We had a bear in our front yard two nights ago. I didn't see it but it left a huge pile of dung. The people across from us tend not to pick up the apples from their apple tree, or pick the apples period. Directly next door, there is a plum tree bursting with fruit. The owners live in your current Whoville and the people who look after their place aren't doing anything with the tree.

That's a shame that those people let the apples go. It'd be nice if everyone made an effort for the community to keep the bears away.

The town site had bear info and it said that there is also a problem with garbage and people not being careful enough. Bears get into the garbage and not only is it dangerous for the bear encountering god knows what kind of sharp objects or plastics in the garbage, but the waste also has the smell of humans on it so bears become accustomed to associating the scent of humans with garbage (i.e. a meal). Somehow it seems appropriate that we should be associated with waste since we produce so much of it.

I hear you re. the waste - very true. I'm thinking of going and stealing the neighbours' plums...

My brother has this long, really heavy steel bar, called the Bear Bar, that we put across the back door every night so bears don't break down the door to get at the garbage. I'm not kidding. Last fall they kept the garbage in the garage and a bear broke down the door to get at it.

I'll look into the necessity of a bear bar.

Definitely go and get some plums. why not ask them to pick them. Wouldn't they be happy to have someone pick them? You would think so.

I have scored plums! The guy was more than happy to let me have a few. They're not quite ripe yet but in a few days, I'll be baking away!

I saw bear spray in Nelson today for $45. You can even get a holster for it, so you can pretend you're Dog the Bounty Hunter.
